Toyota Rush Test Drive Report
ReportFebruary 15,2022An unusual "compact SUV" category
The Rush was born as the most compact SUV, although it may not seem like it when it is described as a "tough and casual sport utility wagon. The RAV4 has become larger, and the compact SUVs that existed until a while ago have either disappeared or grown in size, so the Rush is in a league of its own in this category.
Although it is not a full-fledged XC4WD, it has a built-in ladder frame monocoque body, 4WD with mechanical center differential lock, and VSC that is effective on slippery or snowy roads.
Of course, in the city, the car fits into the 5-number size range, so it can be easily maneuvered as a compact car with a slightly elevated perspective, as in the commercials.
A car that has both a wild and urban side
The SUV style with tires on the back of the car conveys a sense of power without having to explain what kind of car it is.
The interior is also orthodox, with a focus on ease of use, but the larger knobs, switches and shift lever give it a tougher feel. The inner door handles could have been a little sturdier to give it a more XC-like feel.
The equipment is more luxurious than expected, with DAC (Downhill Assist Control), a switch to melt snow on the front window (Window Shield De-Icer), rear fog lights, and even heated seats available as pack options. The driver's seat had good visibility as expected.
The driver's seat is a world of good visibility as expected.
With a hip point of 470mm, the slightly upright style of seating gives a hint of toughness, but the driver's seat offers a world of good visibility as expected. Thanks to the seat lifter and tilt steering wheel, the position is fine and the A-pillars do not get in the way. The shift lever is in a natural position to reach, steering effort is moderate, and the short front armrest is in a surprisingly good place, making it remarkably easy to use in everyday size.
The 1.5 liter compact engine is powerful! The 1.5-liter engine is compact, so it's not very powerful, but the feeling of power rising up slowly is sure to make it easy to use off-road. The handling is not too racy, which is appropriate for a car of this type. The ride quality, however, is reminiscent of the XC4s of a long time ago, with a large amount of shaking in the cabin. The 2WD's lowered suspension seems to be a better match for Japanese road conditions.
The cargo space is quite excellent.
With the tires on the back of the vehicle, rearward visibility is a concern, but I was impressed by the fact that the uppermost part of the vehicle is located under the base of the rear wiper, so it is not in the way at all.
The back door can be opened horizontally with a single action, so there is no problem. The luggage space has a low opening for a car of this type, so it is easy to load and unload luggage. In terms of capacity, there is plenty of room for four golf bags or four suitcases.
In addition, the second row can be double folded to create a larger space, and there is enough room to carry a 26-inch mountain bike. Also, all seats are water repellent, so they are stain resistant, which is a plus.
The Rush is an OEM model of the Daihatsu Vigo. Although the emblems, options, contents and settings for each grade are different, the body color and appearance are basically the same, so you can choose the one that best suits your equipment preferences.
