Dear Esteemed Kenya Importers,
Thank you for using tradecarview.
This is to inform you that the Kenya government has announced that from January 1st, 2017, under the Insurance Act Section 20, an importer must insure his cargo with a registered insurance company in Kenya, as opposed to the current model which importers can choose to insure the cargo with an international insurance company.
As a result of this Insurance Act, importers will be required to buy a marine insurance cover with a local insurance company.
Furthermore, importers may be required to provide a proof of local marine insurance certificate to inspection agency of the vehicle origin and to KRA when clearing the vehicle.
Penalty
In case an importer insures the vehicle with a non-registered insurance company, he will be fined 10,000 KES or imprisonment not exceeding one year or to both for non-compliance.
For more information, kindly check the Insurance Act Section 20 from the link below.
